College Honors Local Heroes
The public is invited to the Salem County Military Service Medal Ceremony on Thursday, November 6 at 6 p.m. in the College’s Davidow Theatre.
On October 29, Salem Community College, the SCC Foundation and the Salem County Department of Veterans Affairs held a dinner to celebrate local heroes.
Held at Maria’s by DiPaolo’s, the Veterans Dinner saluted John Boucher, U.S. Navy; Jim Clifford, U.S. Marine Corps; Matthew Cocking, U.S. Marine Corps; Ralph Law, U.S. Navy; Jack Nestor, U.S. Air Force; Michael Smith, U.S. Army; Rick Weisgerber, U.S. Navy, Retired.
Salem County Director of Veterans Affair Brenda Banks was also honored with the Community Service Award.
“Brenda is a natural fit for the Veterans Department, having been surrounded by family with the same altruistic nature,” said Salem Community College President Dr. Michael Gorman in introducing the award.
In addition to her husband, a Navy Veteran who served during the Gulf War, Brenda -- who was appointed director in January 2024 -- has many family members who also have served in the armed forces.
“Her calling to serve those who have served their country comes with a depth of understanding and compassion that was borne from her continued desire to serve,” said Dr. Gorman. “Salem County Veterans are better for it.”
Special thanks to the event sponsors: Atlantic City Electric; Delaware River & Bay Authority; Franklin Bank; N.J. Third Legislative District: Senator John Burzichelli, Assemblywoman Heather Simmons and Assemblyman David Bailey, Jr.; PSEG Nuclear; and J. Stephen Warner.
