WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A SCC ALUMNI ASSOCIATION MEMBER?

CAMARADERIE

Although each one of us has a unique experience, we have Salem Community College in common. Our experiences have made us a College family and that bond will benefit not only ourselves, but our future alumni.

AMBASSADORSHIP

As graduates, we are proud of our accomplishments. The Alumni Association offers opportunities to share our experiences with students and fellow alumni. As ambassadors, we are a resource for our College and our community in building a bridge between SCC's past and future.

NETWORKING

In today's job market, having a network of friends is a good idea. As SCC alumni, we can keep in touch and share ideas for success. And there is always room to have fun at Alumni Association events.

    Purpose

The purpose of the organization is to achieve the following:

    1. Facilitate communication and fellowship among alumni, students,
      administration, and the College;
    2. Promote and develop good public relations between the College and the
      region it serves;
    3. Assist in the development and growth of Salem Community College and
      the community; and
    4. Promote a spirit of shared interest and active involvement with the Administration, the SCC Foundation, students, alumni and the community.

    Membership

There will be two divisions of membership, including 1) Full, and 2) Associate.

    Section 1

Full membership will be comprised of those individuals who have graduated, transfer students or students currently enrolled in a certificate or degree program at Salem Community College, or received a diploma from the Salem County Technical Institute.

    Section 2

Associate members shall be comprised of current faculty and staff, spouses of graduates, and friends of Salem Community College. Associate members will not have voting privileges.

    Officers

The officers of the Salem Community College Alumni Association shall come from the graduate rolls of the Association, shall be in good standing with the Association, and shall have participated actively in the Association.  The Executive Committee officers will consist of a President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer.

The Executive Committee (also known as the Alumni Board) will consist of the four officers (who are elected), the SCC Foundation Liaison and the members-at-large who are appointed by the College President. Members-at-large shall serve as spokespersons for the Association to groups or organizations within the College, and the public at large. They shall perform such other duties as may be prescribed by the Alumni Board or President. Members-at-large are voting members of the Alumni Board.

    Section 1

The President shall preside at all meetings of the Alumni Board and the Alumni Association. The President shall serve as an ex-officio member of all committees except the Nominating Committee and shall make all required appointments of standing and special committees.

    Section 2

The Vice-President shall assist the President and perform such additional duties as the President or the Executive Committee may designate. The Vice-President shall assume the duties of the President in case of the President’s inability to serve.

    Section 3

The Secretary shall record the minutes of the meetings of the Association and Executive Committee. The Secretary shall keep all records of the Association.

    Section 4

The Treasurer will work in conjunction with the College to keep an accurate account of all Alumni funds. The Treasurer shall render reports to the Executive Committee and the Association, giving itemized statements of the accounts of the Association. In case of dissolution of the Alumni Association, all funds would be allocated to the Salem Community College Foundation.

    Section 5

All officers of the Association shall be elected for two-year terms beginning July 1 and ending June 30 of every odd year.

    Section 6

Prior to the meeting at which officers are to be elected, a Nominating Committee shall present to the Alumni Board a slate of nominees for offices. Election of officers shall be held at the March election meeting. Nominations may be made from the floor, providing prior consent to serve has been given by the person to be nominated. The Nominating Committee will post a slate of officers on the Alumni Association Web page at least three (3) weeks prior to the March meeting.

    Section 7

Should an officer resign during his or her term, the Alumni Association President shall appoint someone to serve the remainder of the term.

    Committees

The general committees of the Association shall be the Executive Committee, Membership Committee, and the Nominating Committee. Other committees may be developed as needed.

    Section 1

The Alumni Board shall consist of the College President, the College staff representative, the Executive Committee, and the chairperson of each established committee.

    Section 2

The Executive Committee shall implement the policies of the Association. It shall make routine decisions and conduct all business that may arise between the regular meetings. The Executive Committee shall make recommendations to the entire Association. In addition to the Alumni Association officers, two College representatives, designated by the College President, will be ex-officio members of the Executive Committee.

    Section 3

The Membership Committee shall be involved in the recruitment of new members and shall assist the College with maintaining an updated alumni database.

    Section 4

The Nominating Committee shall be appointed by the Executive Committee and will be responsible for nominating candidates for the offices of President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer.

    Section 5

In the event no committees beside the Executive Committee exist, the Association shall act as a board of the whole in regards to memberships and nominations.

Since the Executive Committee is the main decision-making body of the Salem Community College Alumni Association, the members, the Salem Community College Foundation, and the College expect you not only to be responsive to their needs but also to be well informed and very prudent as you conduct the business of the Association.  Your role is to ensure the continuity of the Association by planning for the future, establishing and reviewing the major policies and programs that support its purpose, and aiding the College in meeting short-and long-range goals.

    Specific Responsibilities

    • Review bylaws and long-range plans periodically to thoroughly understand the mission of the Association and your responsibilities.
    • Read minutes of previous meetings to learn what has been accomplished and why.
    • Attend the Executive Committee meetings.
    • Accept specific assignments resulting from action at Executive Committee meetings.
    • Support policies and programs adopted by the Association.
    • Approve, establish, prioritize, and evaluate the programs and services of the Association to be sure they serve its mission (purpose).
    • Participate in the planning and carrying out of special events and Alumni programs.
    • Consider your public statements carefully because your remarks may be taken as official policy.

The bylaws may be amended by the Executive Committee at any regular or special meeting provided the substance of the amendment(s) has been included in the notification of the meeting, which shall be emailed to each Executive Committee member at least two weeks prior to the date of the meeting.
