PRESIDENT'S BLOG

Your Salem COMMUNITY College

Your Salem COMMUNITY College

Every presentation I make starts with, “My name is Mike Gorman and I have the privilege of serving as president of YOUR Salem Community College (SCC).”  The message is two-fold.  First, I want you to know how fortunate I am to hold this position of service to Salem County.  Second, we always want to acknowledge your ownership of the College.  As citizens of the County and the State, you contribute to the support of SCC.  In other words, we are all in this together as we help students discover their pathways to the future.

Note this blog’s headline (bold caps) “COMMUNITY.”  Your Salem Community College does more than serve the students in our classrooms.  SCC is the educational epicenter, cultural hub, and business facilitator of Salem County.  Whether it is developing tomorrow’s workforce in cooperation with our K-12 colleagues, or hosting the numerous cultural events from concerts to theater, or conducting business-oriented seminars in cooperation with the Chamber of Commerce, the Economic Development Council, or our County Commissioners, YOUR Salem Community College is poised to serve this community.

Coming off the holidays, we have harvested memories, broken resolutions, and complained about the weather.  And we can relish in the acknowledgement of our various successful food drives around the holidays.  However, now, in the doldrums of winter, the need is greatest.  Yes, the holidays have passed but the fight against hunger has not.  If you are in a position to help the less fortunate, please donate to your local community food pantry.  Likely there is one in a local church, or an independent municipal effort nearby.  A nation of abundance should send no one to bed hungry.  If you don’t have a food pantry nearby, the Salem Community College Oak Essentials Food Pantry welcomes contributions and support whether it be canned goods or cash.  You can help a food insecure student today to ensure their future tomorrow.

You can contact Oakessentials@salemcc.edu to schedule a donation drop off, or you can purchase items right off of Amazon (https://a.co/9wheNDs) for delivery to the pantry.

You can also help fight hunger in our campus community by donating to the Oak Essentials at this link:

Also, note that on Friday, February 13th, the College will partner with St. John of God Community Services with the "Feel the Love" event.  St. John of God’s mobile food pantry will operate in front of Davidow Hall from 10 a.m. to noon. “Feel the Love” will be open to SCC students and the greater community.  Look for additional information soon.
