Glass Experiences & Open House Events

SCC's Glass Education Center host a variety of glass workshops and events throughout the year. With offerings of a one-day experience to classes consisting of multiple days of intensive study, Salem Community College has workshops for both the novice glassmaker and for those with years of experience.

15-Week Fall Glass Art Courses!

Visiting students are welcome to enroll in our Glass Art courses!
Classes meet one day per week and students have studio access six days per week!

    Learn the art of glassblowing, flameworking, glass fusing, kiln casting, and more at SCC's Glass Education Center! No prior experience with glass is necessary, though those with experience will benefit as well! You do not need to be a degree seeking student to enroll in these exciting glassmaking courses!

    15-Week Fall 2026 Courses (September 8 - December 21)

    15-week Fall and Spring courses meet one day per week, with students having access to the Glass Education Center 6-days per week. Registration begins March 2. 

    FNA110: Creative Principles of Flameworking
    Saturdays, 9:00 am - 12:55 pm 

    This introductory course introduces the tools and techniques of flameworked glass. Hands-on experiences enable the student to gain the hand skills necessary to create with glass. Class projects emphasize both the technical and creative elements necessary for creating significant flameworked glass. 

    FNA150: Glassblowing I
    Mondays, 6:00 pm – 9:35 pm

    This course provides a basic introduction to hot glass blowing. Students will be introduced to various methods in an effort to give them the basic knowledge necessary to create both functional and nonfunctional glass objects. Students will apply fundamentals of 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional design as they learn different ways of manipulating glass forms in both solid and blown states.

    FNA221: Glass Kiln Techniques
    Wednesdays, 5:40 pm – 9:15 pm

    Glass Kiln Techniques includes a variety of processes for manipulating glass in a kiln including fusing, slumping, enamel painting, and other techniques for creating imagery. Processes will be introduced through demonstrations performed by the instructor, lectures, handouts, and other support materials. The topics include kiln set-up, types of glass, compatibility, incorporation of non-glass materials, annealing, and finishing (cold working, cold color application).

    FNA222: Glass Kiln Casting
    Tuesdays, 1:00 pm – 4:20 pm

    Glass Kiln Casting will survey several techniques utilized to cast glass. The techniques to be covered will include the following: open-faced molds, multi part molds, pate de verre, and silicone/rubber mold making for the lost wax process of casting. 

    SGT204, Glass Equipment Design and Fabrication**
    Mondays, 9:00 am - 12:35 pm

    This course covers the basics of glassworking equipment design and fabrication, including gas and electrically powered devices. Fabrication will include steel, refractory insulation, heating systems, safety systems and control systems. Students in the class will construct their very own kiln! ** This is a metal fabrication course, and is not a hands-on glass course.

    2-Session Glass Kaleidoscope Workshop

    Saturdays - September 9 & 12
    Open to adults, ages 18+
    No prior experience necessary!

      Glass Kaleidoscope Workshop
      Two Saturday Sessions: September 12 & 19 
      9:00 am - 12:00 pm
      Ages 18+ | $250 per student

      Create your very own glass kaleidoscope using two glass processes - flameworking and stained glass!

      This exciting, hands-on workshop invites participants to explore two glassmaking processes over the course of two sessions. In the first session on September 12, participants will meet in the Glass Education Center's flameworking studio to create a colorful glass marble at the torch. This handcrafted marble will become the focal point of their finished kaleidoscope.

      During the second session, on September 19, participants will construct a complementary kaleidoscope with a mirrored interior designed to showcase their marble. As light passes through the scope, reflections of the marble create mesmerizing geometric patterns, transforming the finished piece into a unique, functional work of art.

      Whether you're completely new to glassmaking or already have some experience, this workshop offers a fun, creative opportunity to build your skills, explore new techniques, and leave with a one-of-a-kind creation.

      No prior experience with glass is required for this fun and educational glass experience! Ages 18 and up are welcome to participate in this workshop. 

      This class will meet two Saturdays, September 12 & 19, 9:00 am - 12:00 pm.

Working with glass does inherently come with some risk. We like to minimize any chance of injury by adhering to a strict health and safety policy. On that note, you will want to be sure to adhere to the dress code below.

      Beyond coming dressed properly to work in the studio please bring with you your excitement and enthusiasm; everything else you need we will have here for you! All materials necessary for this workshop are included! 

      GEC Dress Code:
      -No open-toed or open-heeled shoes permitted.
      -Natural fiber clothing only, avoid synthetics.
      -No skirts. No leggings/jeggings. Shorts are allowed if they are knee length or longer.
      -Long hair must be tied back and loose clothing secured.

        Available Workshops on September 27th:

        New Project! Fused Glass Clock*, 1.5 hour session from 12:30 - 2:00 pm or 2:30 - 4:00 pm, $75.00 per person -Create your very own fused glass clock in this new workshop offering! Participants will create their  glass clock by layering pieces of flat glass and enamels and heating them in a kiln. Your creation will have a fully functional clock mechanism added to it, creating a beautiful, one-of-a-kind timepiece for your home! Ages 4 and up. Under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. 
         
        Colorful Frit Pendants (hanging focal beads), 3 hour session from 1:00 - 4:00 pm, $60.00 per person - Spend a full three hours in our flameworking studio using glass, heat, gravity and simple tools to create your very own colorful pendants with glass at the torch! This workshop will utilize crushed glass, know as frit, to add multiple color to these beautiful, one-of-a-kind creations! Each participant will have enough time to create multiple beads! Ages 12 and up. Under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.   
         
        Blown Glass Pumpkin*, 1.5 hour sessions between 12:00 - 1:30 pm or 2:30 - 4:00 pm, $75.00 - Participants will create a glass pumpkin from the glass furnace in our glassblowing studio! Utilizing molten glass, you will select from a wide variety of colors to manipulate and shape your one-of-a-kind pumpkin with the guidance and assistance of our incredible team of glassblowers! Ages 12 and up. Under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

        (*Due to the process, items will need to be picked up at a later date, or can be shipped for an additional fee.)

        Cancellation Policy: Cancellations made more than one-week prior to event are subject to a $15 cancellation fee per ticket. Cancellations made within 48 hours of the workshop will be refunded half the registration fee per ticket. Cancellations made with less than 48 hours notice are non-refundable.

          This exciting, hands-on workshop is an awesome introduction to blown glass and will focus on the art of traditional glassmaking at the furnace, where you'll learn how to manipulate molten glass into a variety of solid and hollow forms. Clear and colored glass will be explored. Whether you're completely new to the process or already have some experience, this class will help you build your skills and explore new techniques!

          No prior experience with glass is required for this fun and educational glass experience! Ages 18 and up are welcome to participate in this workshop. (18 or under, but interested as well? Keep an eye out for our upcoming teen glassblowing workshop in December!)

            Saturday Stained Glass Workshop
            Three Saturday Sessions: October 17, 24, 31

            Ages 18+ | $275 per student

            Find inspiration in glistening glass! Join us for a multi-week stained glass workshop!

            The focus in this course is to learn the basics of stained glass using the copper foil method.  Participants will develop skills in pattern design, use of colors, cutting and grinding glass, foiling, soldering, and wrapping the finished pieces in came. We will also discuss tools, solutions, and safety considerations for the home studio. 

            Beginners welcome! No prior experience is necessary! 

            Caution: Stained glass has been known to be a gateway to a glass art addiction!

            This class meets three consecutive Saturdays - October 17, 24, and 31; 9:00 am - 1:00 pm. 

            Materials for participating in the course are included.

              Fused Fall Themed Votive Candle Holder*, 1.5 hour session from 12:30 - 2:00 pm or 2:30 - 4:00 pm, $50.00 per person - Create your very own fused glass votive candle holder! Participants will create their one-of-a-kind fall or Halloween themed votive holder by layering pieces of flat glass and enamels and heating them in a kiln. Ages 4 and up. Under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. 
               
              Flameworked Halloween Themed Glass Pendants (hanging focal beads), 3 hour session from 1:00 - 4:00 pm, $70.00 per person - Spend a full three hours in our flameworking studio using glass, heat, gravity and simple tools to create your very own Halloween themed glass pendants at the torch! Each participant will have enough time to create multiple beads! Ages 12 and up. Under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Participants will create their one-of-a-kind lantern by layering pieces of flat glass and enamels and heating them in a kiln. The glass panels will be inserted as the windows to a glass lantern that will add light and color to your home!  Ages 4 and up. Under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. 
                 
                Flameworked Glass Leaf Pendants (hanging focal beads), 3 hour session from 1:00 - 4:00 pm, $70.00 per person - Spend a full three hours in our flameworking studio using glass, heat, gravity and simple tools to create your very own glass pendants, colored and shaped into leaves, at the torch!                     Fused Glass Winter/Holiday Themed Ornament*, 1.5 hour session from 12:30 - 2:00 pm or 2:30 - 4:00 pm, $50.00 per person - Create your very own fused glass ornament! Be inspired by the winter season or create a ornament to become a part of your family's holiday collection! Participants will create their one-of-a-kind ornament by layering pieces of flat glass and enamels and heating them in a kiln. Your glass ornament can be hung in a window, on a tree, or wherever you would like to admire it in your home! Ages 4 and up. Under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
                     
                    Flameworked Glass Icicle Ornaments, 3 hour session from 1:00 - 4:00 pm, $70.00 per person - Spend a full three hours in our flameworking studio using glass, heat, gravity and simple tools to create your very own beautiful glass icicle ornaments! Each participant will have enough time to create multiple icicles! Ages 12 and up. Under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.   
                     
                    Blown Glass Ornaments*, 1.5 hour sessions between 12:00 - 1:30 pm or 2:30 - 4:00 pm, $60.00 - Participants will create a glass ornament ball from the glass furnace in our glassblowing studio!
