SCC secures practice site for new football program
As Salem Community College studied the feasibility of starting a football program, the practice site appeared to be the largest obstacle.
Thanks to the support from Carneys Point Township Committee (past and present), the township’s recreation department and soccer association, SCC has found a home for Mighty Oaks Football.
This week, College officials announced the purchase from the township of a 6-acre practice location adjacent to the Carneys Point Recreation Complex on Penns Grove-Auburn Road. On the site known as Twins’ Field, SCC will build an athletics facility in conjunction with The Authority (the Cumberland County Improvement Authority).
"The purchase of this property marks another important step forward for Salem Community College Athletics," said Director of Athletics Bob Hughes. "As we expand our programs and prepare for the launch of football this year, this dedicated practice facility will give our student-athletes the space they need to grow, compete, and represent SCC with pride, while creating new opportunities for students throughout our county and region."
In January, SCC introduced Jay Accorsi as the Mighty Oaks' first head football coach. Accorsi came to Salem after a distinguished career at Rowan University, where he served as head football coach from 2002 to 2023, compiling an impressive 143-78 record and establishing the Profs as one of the premier programs in NCAA Division III football.
