Robert Russell is the new instructional chair of Salem Community College’s internationally renowned Scientific Glass Technology (SGT) program.
A 1979 graduate of the SGT program and a master scientific glassblower, Russell recently completed a distinguished 30-year career at Chemglass Life Sciences in Vineland.
Russell assumed the instructional chair position in January, succeeding Dennis Briening, who retired. From 2012 until last fall, Russell was an SCC part-time faculty member, teaching first- and second-year SGT students.
Russell is a 29-year member of the American Scientific Glassblowers Society (ASGS). He chaired the ASGS Delaware Valley Section from 2002-2008.
The Millville resident also holds a bachelor’s degree in art from Virginia Tech.
At Salem Community College, he leads the nation’s only two-year degree program in scientific glass technology. The program combines classroom study and hands-on laboratory techniques, technical drawing and advanced fabrication. Scientific glassblowers create glass apparatus for scientific research in laboratories, universities and industry.
