Salem Community College’s Mary Eklund and Noah McFadden earned the 2020 Arlene Kelley Service to Students Award. They are highly respected for their dedication, can-do spirit and positive attitude.
The annual recognition honors the memory of the admissions secretary who served the College for over 21 years. Like Arlene, the recipients demonstrate a dedication and passion to student success, go the extra mile to address student concerns and make extraordinary contributions in serving students.

“During this unprecedented time,” said Laura Green, chair of the Student Life Committee, “Mary and Noah have been instrumental and have gone above and beyond to guarantee that students received continuous and holistic support and service for a successful completion of the spring semester, despite the circumstances.”

SCC’s instructional technology specialist, Eklund was praised by her nominator for her seemingly 24/7 support of students’ questions about Canvas, a learning management platform. “If you have any issues with Canvas, you should contact Mary,” said Green. “She is very generous with her time, setting up their courses, and contacting publishers to address online book issues. She does this all with clarity, patience, and genuine care.”

Eklund’s nominator said, “Her perseverance and unrelenting pursuit at solving issues and making sure students with disabilities have all the accessibility options available to them has been nothing short of impressive.”

McFadden’s talents and contributions are deeply felt, seen and woven into the fabric of SCC. “We have relied on Noah’s expertise to improve the student experience through the website, technology support and videos, including our new virtual tour,” said Green of the College’s web specialist.

McFadden’s nominator highlighted that “Noah has shown unwavering and steady patience in helping several students work through technological problems without one trace of negativity or frustration. On at least one occasion, he made himself available on a Saturday to assist a student.”
