Joanne (Jodi) Welch turned to SCC after life-changing events in 2014. “I decided to pick up my dream of becoming a nurse and found myself in front of an advisor who then helped me apply for FAFSA,” she recalled. “Before I knew it, I was enrolled and started on my prerequisites.”
Jodi is now a proud SCC graduate, having earned a Practical Nursing (PN) certificate in 2018 and two associate degrees in Nursing (ADN) and Health Science in May 2019. “My experiences in the PN and ADN programs, although challenging, helped prepare me in clinicals as well as the workforce,” said Jodi, an RN at Christiana Hospital who is taking prerequisite courses at SCC to pursue a bachelor’s degree. “The faculty and staff are committed to the students and genuinely care about our future as SCC graduates.”
Jodi described the 2018-19 academic year as a “milestone” for her family. “As a parent, one prays that they are setting an example for their children. Although life throws curves and it can be scary, with faith and hard work, the impossible can be possible,” she said. “On May 16, my daughter Haley was pinned in the PN ceremony and, shortly after, she pinned me in the ADN ceremony. My son Logan is currently enrolled at SCC in Criminal Justice and is doing well. I could not be more proud of my children.”
Jodi said she would highly recommend the SCC nursing program to fellow adult students. “The program is affordable and manageable. I maintained two jobs and was a single parent to two children and a dog. It was challenging but obtainable with minimum debt.”
In August, the Pennsville resident took the oath of office as the alumni trustee. Elected by fellow members of the Class of 2019, Jodi said she wants to offer the student body’s perspective and communicate their needs during her one-year term on the Board of Trustees.
Jodi pointed out that she hasn’t accomplished everything on her own. “I could not have achieved any of this without my faith in God, my church family at Sharptown Methodist who prayed for me daily, and my family and dear friends. My experience with Salem Community College is one I hold dear to my heart."
