From July 21-27, Maura Cavanagh Dick enjoyed Iowa’s picturesque countryside and welcoming towns from a unique perspective: Her bicycle seat. Salem Community College’s Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs visited Salem, Iowa and even camped at SCC (Southeastern Community College).
After completing the eastbound journey from Council Bluffs to Keokuk, Maura posted this celebratory message on Facebook:
“RAGBRAI 2019....we did it!!! From the Missouri to the Mighty Mississippi...460 miles cycled and we ended with the ceremonial dip of the front tire and the raise of the bike!! After a glorious night in a hotel with a bed and a shower...my muscles are sore but feeling strong with accomplishment...my heart is full with memories of a week spent with my two favorite brothers, my dear friend, our RS crew, and 10,000 other amazing, strong human beings! Thank you Iowa...the landscape was beautiful, the hills and the wind were tough, and we are beyond thankful to your towns for opening their roads and water spouts to us....and for the beer and pie....until we meet again...”
Sponsored by The Des Moines Register, RAGBRAI stands for the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa. The noncompetitive event was first held in 1973. This year, Maura rode in her first RAGBRAI with her two brothers and friends from the College of William and Mary, her alma mater. About 10,000 riders completed the full week, with upwards of 40,000 joining for single days along the way.
