Step 1: Annual Assessment Plan
STEP 1: DEVELOP AN ANNUAL ASSESSMENT PLAN (full-time faculty only)
A. Review Program Outcomes
Review the key outcomes you want students to achieve upon completion of the program
A program's or department's goals and outcomes are clearly tied to the mission of Salem Community College. A department states its outcomes in clear, measurable terms and collects data appropriate to these outcomes. Program outcomes are listed in the SCC College Catalog under each academic program. If necessary, outcomes may be updated during Academic Program Review but must be approved by Curriculum Review Committee.
Visit General Education or Program Outcomes pages to review the competencies and outcomes that have been identified.

Outline the areas of focus for each academic year
The Department may focus on one or two program outcomes per academic year. The Annual Assesment Plan is the primary means of communication about which program outcomes are being assessed. Once the Annual Assessment Plan is submitted, faculty should collect data only for the specified courses and assignments for both fall and spring semesters. The Plan can be updated each academic year. Be sure to cover all program outcomes/objectives within the five year Academic Program Review timeframe.
Use the Annual Assessment Plan template to select the key program and general education outcomes/objectives you will be measuring this academic year and provide information about how you will measure those outcomes.
Please provide all requested information which is necessary to set up the database and data collection tools. Each piece of information is needed. Email your assessment plan to OAC Chair (thack@salemcc.edu) and Assessment Coordinator (jgraeber@salemcc.edu). Attach your assignment and rubric to this same email.
C. Develop Assessment Tools (Assignments and Rubrics)
Develop appropriate assignments and rubrics that clearly measure the desired outcome each academic year
Faculty identify and develop standardized assignments and rubrics which are used in all sections of the course being offered that semester. Programs and departments employ multiple measures, including direct measures of learning, to assess if the desired outcome is being achieved. In many cases, this assessment tool is a capstone learning experience. The assignment should be given after appropriate learning opportunities have been presented. All assignments should be measured using the same standard rubric.
1. Develop an assignment that measures the desired outcome. Use the Assignment Cover Sheet.
2. Develop a corresponding rubric that is used to grade the assignment in all sections of the course. See a sample rubric.
3. Email electronic copies of the assignment and rubric to jgraeber@salemcc.edu and thack@salemcc.edu. It will be posted on the web site.
4. Assignments and rubrics may be subject to approval. They may also be peer-reviewed by the Outcomes Assessment Committee (OAC)
