Part-Time Faculty
Salem Community College is proud of its many excellent part-time faculty members, who bring professional experience into the classroom. Here are two examples of instructors sharing their expertise with Salem Community College students:
Amber Cowan
Amber Cowan is a sculptor using the material of glass as her primary media. She has been working with glass for over 10 years and has received both her BFA in Glass from Salisbury University and her MFA in Glass from Temple University's Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. She has been an instructor at some of the world's most prominent glass facilities and has worked with many of the leading artists in the world of contemporary glass.
She is currently working with a process which involves flameworking recycled or found glass that is usually American-pressed glass from the 1940's to the 1970's. Her work was selected to appear in the prestigious New Glass Review 33. Published by The Corning Museum of Glass, New Glass Review is an annual survey of glass in contemporary art, architecture, craft, and design created in the previous year by emerging and established artists.
Amber has taught Introduction to Flameworking at SCC since 2011. She was among a select group of three artists chosen for a residency at the Toledo Workshops Revisited, marking the 50th anniversary of the studio glass movement, in March 2012 and earned The Stephen Procter Fellowship at The Glass Workshop at Australia National University in summer 2012. She serves on Salem Community College's International Flameworking Conference (IFC) committee and demonstrated at the 2011 IFC.
Jenna H. Efrein
Born in 1970 and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., Jenna H. Efrein continually pursues her passion for art in all forms.
Jenna attended Bennington College and received her bachelor’s degree from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Wash. in 1993. Between college and graduate school, she taught stained glass at an art center, sold her work at craft shows, and created numerous custom stained and kiln-fired projects for private homes and businesses. After earning her MFA in Sculpture/Dimensional Studies at Alfred University in 2009, Efrein moved to Philadelphia. There, she found work as curator, manager and instructor for private glass-blowing lessons at Hudson Beach Glass.
An adjunct at Salem Community College since 2010, she has taught Drawing, 2D Design, Kiln-forming, Kiln-casting and pâté de verre, Cold Construction and Glass Survey.
With the assistance of SCC students, she has given a demonstration and a slide-talk as a pre-auction event for Philadelphia’s National Liberty Museum and at GoggleWorks in Reading, Pa. She also has presented at the Chemical Heritage Foundation for the Old City art district’s First Friday event in Philadelphia.
