Lisa Windstein and her mother, Patricia, spent quality time together at Salem Community College in summer 2007.  After several vacations in Spanish-speaking countries, Patricia was ready to learn how to converse better with native speakers.

Lisa, a liberal arts major and a 2006 Woodstown High School graduate, talked her mother into taking Elementary Spanish I to help prepare them for a family vacation to Costa Rica.  It was Patricia’s first college course.  Lisa said, “I told her it would be a good idea to take it.  The class would help her out a lot.”

Recalling one frustrating experience on a trip, Patricia said, “One problem I once had was asking for a wash cloth.  I could not explain to this girl that I needed one.  I was doing charades but she didn’t understand me.  This class helped me out with that kind of situation.”

“This mother-daughter duo symbolizes what SCC is all about: reaching out to individuals and families and helping them achieve their academic goals together,” said Naydeen Gonzalez-De Jesus, who taught the course.

“What was more exciting than anything else was having the mom come to college for the VERY FIRST TIME in her life and my Spanish 101 class being part of her first college experience,” continued Gonzalez-De Jesus, who is SCC’s acting assistant dean of Student Services.  “That was neat.”

Patricia said she was pleased with her decision to enroll.  “The class helped me tremendously,” she said.
