Provides an introduction to basic financial accounting systems. Using manual and computerized accounting systems, students complete practical accounting problems. As a required course for business administration students, the course focuses on accounting activities aimed at providing information for business decisions. Topics include generally accepted principles of financial accounting, preparation of financial statements, the accrual basis of accounting, and accounting for assets. Types of firms studied are partnerships, proprietorships, corporations, service companies and merchandising companies. Computer applications will include the introduction to the use of electronic spreadsheets and using the internet. Computer activities -- which include the introduction of electronic spreadsheets -- reinforce accounting principles, provide problem-solving tools and develop decision-making skills.
