Description: 
Surveys major American writers and their works from colonial times to the end of the Civil War. Puritan and colonial writing, romanticism and transcendentalism are examined through the works of such authors as Bradford, Mather, Bradstreet, Franklin, Rowlandson, Cooper, Hawthorne, Wheatley, Poe, Melville, Emerson, Thoreau, Whitman, Dickinson and Douglas.
