Jay Musler headlines SCC’s International Flameworking Conference

World-renowned glass artist Jay Musler will offer insights into his unique craft at Salem Community College’s annual International Flameworking Conference, Friday-Sunday, March 16-19.

The conference also will include demonstrations by Christopher McElroy of Richmond, Va., Margaret Neher of Ithaca, N.Y. and Jeri Warhaftig of West Orange; a talk by Jesse Kohl of Middlesex; a panel discussion moderated by Amber Cowan of Philadelphia; and a webcast presented live from Eureka, Calif. by Garth Johnson.

Work by Salem Community College student Nancy DuBois has been included in New Glass Review 32, a highly respected national publication by the Corning Museum of Glass. 

DuBois, a Salem resident, is majoring in Glass: Applied Craft and Design.  Her work, “Spring Cullet Dress Size 16,” was one of 100 pieces selected for the publication. 

SCC glass workshops to run this fall

Salem Community College will offer glass workshops on Sundays this fall at its Samuel H. Jones Glass Education Center, 286 Welchville Road, Alloway.  Unless otherwise noted, workshops are for beginners.

Flameworked Blown Ornaments takes place Oct. 16 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Using heavy colored glass tubing, participants make their own blown ornaments over a gas torch.  Students also experiment with overlays and silver foil.  The cost is $125.

Students use Soxhlet Extractors to remove flavors from various vegetable matter.

The only Associate in Applied Science degree program of its kind in the nation, Salem Community College’s Scientific Glass Technology (SGT) introduces students to the necessary skills and techniques to construct scientific glass apparatus for university laboratories, industrial research and production.

This spring when SGT students were creating apparatus components to use in their Organic Chemistry class, Instructional Chair Dennis Briening pointed out the career benefits of the project.

SCC takes home the gold at Glass Olympics

Salem Community College hosted - and won - the annual national Glass Olympics this spring.

Seventy-five students participated, representing Alfred University, Bowling Green State University, Kent State University, Cleveland Institute of Art and SCC.

Describing Salem Community College students as "valuable ambassadors who won the competition with grace and charm," Rika Hawes, Assistant Professor of Glass Art, said the hosts "showed remarkable community spirit and technical prowess."

At the 11th annual International Flameworking Conference, glass artists from around the globe encouraged students to challenge the boundaries of using glass as a creative medium.

Held in Salem Community College’s Paul J. Stankard Studio and Lab at the Samuel H. Jones Glass Education Center in Alloway, N.J., the event featured well-known glass masters.  More than 300 attended the three-day conference sponsored by the SCC Foundation and supported by several businesses.

Jo Wu has accepted a position as a scientific glassblower at The Australian National University.

Jo Wu is living her life just as she chooses -- making art and scientific apparatus from glass.

“I love everything about working with glass,” said Wu, a Salem Community College student double-majoring in scientific glass and glass art.   

Wu’s decision to attend SCC came after being involved in a nearly-fatal car accident, an incident that she says changed her life.
