Tuition Pains

There is no such thing as a free lunch. Even if you are not the one paying, someone is handling the expense. It is pretty much the same with education. There is no “free” education. Taxes and tuition provide the basis of support for instructors, facilities, maintenance, and supplies. It’s a simple equation – for every benefit, there is an investment/expense/cost.

Your Salem Community College, while not free, is a bargain. We exercise our fiscal responsibility to our community by containing costs, assisting students with financial aid, and keeping students “course efficient” and on target toward their academic goals.

This year, your Salem Community College tuition rises by 2.5% (rounded up to the nearest dollar) or $185. This is what we projected last spring. Our new tuition rates go into effect July 1, 2020 (2nd Summer Session). SCC’s simplified tuition has done away with all but course-specific material costs. We remain competitive, within dollars of surrounding colleges, and about 1/3 of the cost of state four-year colleges.

Below is the link to our tuition grid for this year, along with projections for the next two academic years. We do this to provide you with a transparent projection of what you will invest in your education. You will note a significant spike in out-of-state tuition (other than Delaware residents). New Jersey and Salem County subsidize residents; however, that does not apply to the out-of-state students. We must strive to offset that expense with a tuition hike, moving to $295 a credit. This is still one of the lowest out-of-state tuition rates.

A significant portion of our student body comes from nearby Delaware. As a result, we have established a “Delaware” tuition rate of $244 a credit. This still remains well below our sister colleges and keeps your SCC within the affordable context we advertise.

None of this is easy, but we are striving every day to improve our services, which means we are always conscious of tuition costs. If you have questions about tuition, direct them to my office, mgorman@salemcc.edu at any time.
