Winter 2012 Scholarship Newsletter 

Salem Community College offers many scholarships. The anticipated scholarships are listed by specialty and name, and, in most cases, include the following:

  • the amount
  • the primary criteria for selection
  • the application process

Priority will be given to students who apply by June 1. Scholarships will continue to be awarded as funds are available. Scholarship recipients will be notified starting in July.

Accepting a scholarship is an honor and identifies the recipient as an SCC Scholar. In accepting the award, the student agrees to:

  • participate in the SCC Scholars pre-semester meeting
  • meet once a semester with a scholarship advisor
  • represent the College by volunteering at community functions twice a year

General Education Scholarships

  1. Salem Community College Scholarships (14)
    • Up to 12 credits for fall and spring semesters
    • 2.7 or higher cumulative GPA and evidence of strong academic potential required (Freshmen are eligible after first semester.)
    • Salem County resident
  2. 2. SCC Foundation General Education Scholarship (1)
    • Up to $3,000 per academic year
    • Must be enrolled in a degree/certificate program
    • Demonstrated record of academic excellence with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher (Freshmen are eligible after first semester.)
  3. 3. Ann C. Campbell Scholarship (1)
    • $2,500 per academic year
    • Returning adult/nontraditional student
  4. 4. Sol and Jean Davidow Scholarships (2)
    • 15 credits for fall semester and 15 credits (tuition only) for spring semester
    • Must maintain full-time status
    • Demonstrated record of academic excellence with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher (Freshmen are eligible after first semester.)
  5. 5. Herbert C. Donaghay Scholarship (1)
    • $500 per academic year
    • Full-time student who has completed at least 30 college credits with a demonstrated record of academic excellence with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  6. 6. James Howard Farris Scholarship (1)
    • $500 per academic year
    • Salem County resident
    • Student must be an orphan, foster child and/or adopted
  7. 7. Simon Fried Scholarship (1)
    • $500 per academic year
    • Developmental-level student with strong academic potential preferred with a cumulative GPA of 2.7 or higher
  8. 8. Salem County Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Foundation, Inc. Scholarship (1)
    • Up to $500 per academic year
    • Salem County resident
  9. Mrs. Elizabeth H. Yerkes Scholarship (1)
    • Up to $3,000 per academic year
    • Must maintain good academic standing with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher (Freshmen are eligible after first semester.)

Academic Major Scholarships

  1. Batsto Citizens Committee, Inc. Scholarship, In Memory of Joseph Fralinger and Stella Grote (1)
    • Up to $3,500 per academic year
    • Student must be a U.S. citizen
    • Full-time student enrolled in Glass Art, Scientific Glass Technology or Glass Industrial Design
    • Demonstrated record of academic and/or work excellence
    • Must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA
    • Recipient must be a member of the American Scientific Glassblowers Society (ASGS) or Glass Art Society (GAS)
    • Recipient must be willing to volunteer his/her time to interpretive efforts regarding glassmaking, at Batsto Village in Hammonton, N.J.
  2. Sheila Bernstein Business Scholarship (1)
    • $750 per academic year
    • Must be enrolled in a business degree/certificate program
    • Second-year student with demonstrated record of academic excellence with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  3. Richard L. Harris Charleston Scholarship (1)
    • $500 per academic year
    • Second-year business major intending to go into his/her own business
    • Low-income family
    • Salem City resident (first choice) or Salem County resident
    • Student may receive this scholarship only once
  4. Chemglass Inc. Scholarship, In Memory of Walter Philip Surdam (1)
    • $3,000 per academic year
    • Second-year scientific glass technology student
    • Member of American Scientific Glassblowers Society
    • Demonstrated record of academic excellence with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  5. Charles Dana Foundation Scholarship (1)
    • $2,500 per academic year
    • Full-time scientific glass technology or glass art student
    • Mark Eyerman Memorial Nursing Scholarship (1)
    • $1,500 per academic year
    • Fully accepted into Practical Nursing program
    • Minimum GPA of 3.0 required
  6. Fralinger Engineering Scholarship (1)
    • $1,000 per academic year
    • Preference given to student who intends to pursue a career in Engineering or CADD
  7. Robert M. Minkoff Foundation Scholarship (1)
    • Up to $4,000 per academic year for tuition, fees and books
    • Full-time glass art student
    • Student must achieve a minimum 3.0 GPA each semester to maintain eligibility for the scholarship for up to two years
  8. Thomas Poland Nursing Scholarships (2)
    • Up to 15 credits for fall semester and 15 credits for spring semester
    • Fully accepted into Practical Nursing program
    • Record of academic excellence with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  9. PSEG Power Scholarship (up to 10)
    • First-year students may be eligible for up to 50 percent of tuition and lab fees
    • Second-year students may be eligible for up to 100 percent of tuition and lab fees
    • Students must be enrolled in the Nuclear Energy Technology program
    • Must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident
    • Must pass annual nuclear background check and drug testing
  10. 11. Salem County Police Chiefs Association Scholarship (1)
    • $2,500 per academic year
    • Salem County resident
    • Criminal justice major who has completed at least one year of study
    • 3.0 cumulative GPA or higher
  11. Salem County Retired Educators Philanthropic Foundation Scholarships (2)
    • $750 per academic year
    • Salem County resident
    • Student must be pursuing a career in education
  12. Paul and Patricia Stankard Glass Scholarship (1)
    • $2,500 per academic year
    • Full-time glass art student
    • New Jersey resident
  13. Sustainable Energy Technology Scholarship & Book Grants (number varies)
    • Up to 100% of tuition and fees per academic year for full-time students
    • Students must have completed one semester, or at least 12 credits toward SET degree, including SET 101
    • Students must maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA
    • Up to $500 per academic year for books and course materials for part-time students
    • Part-time students must have completed SET 101 to be eligible
  14. Verizon Foundation Scholarship (1)
    • $3,000 per academic year
    • Second-year student majoring in technology or business

Organizational Scholarships

  1. Atlantic City Electric Scholarship (1)
    • $2,500 per academic year
    • Student must be involved in local rescue squad, EMT or fire department
    • Demonstrated record of academic excellence with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher (Freshmen are eligible after first semester.)
  2. Century Savings Bank/Community Banking Plus Scholarship (1)
    • $2,000 per academic year
    • Second-year full-time student
    • Salem County resident
    • Record of academic achievement with a cumulative GPA of 2.7 or higher
  3. Delaware River and Bay Authority Scholarship (1)
    • $2,500 per academic year
    • Must maintain full-time status
  4. New Jersey Firefighters Scholarships (2)
    • $500 per semester
    • Must be a N.J. firefighter or a dependent
  5. New Jersey Police Scholarships (2)
    • $500 per semester
    • Must be a N.J. police officer or a dependent
  6. OxyVinyls Scholarship (1)
    • $250 per academic year
    • Female or minority student with a concentration in math and/or science
  7. Partners of Salem County Scholarships (4)
    • $1,000 per academic year
    • Salem County resident
  8. Pennsville National Bank Scholarship (1)
    • $3,000 per academic year
    • Finance or Business Major
    • Minimum GPA of 3.0 required
  9. Rotary Club of Penns Grove Scholarship (1)
    • $500 per academic year
    • Must maintain full-time status
    • Demonstrated academic promise with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher (Freshmen are eligible after first semester.)
    • Penns Grove, Carneys Point or Pedricktown resident
  10. Rotary Club of Salem Scholarship (1)
    • $500 per academic year
    • Demonstrated academic excellence with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher (Freshmen are eligible after first semester.)
    • Salem City resident or Salem High School graduate
  11. Salem County Historical Society Scholarship, In Memory of John Stewart Rock (1)
    • $500 (tuition or textbooks) per academic year
    • Salem County resident
    • First-year student; graduate from a Salem County high school, Class of 2011
    • One-page essay required, demonstrating student is goal-oriented, motivated and deserving of special recognition

Specialty Scholarships and Grants

  1. Lauren Rose Albert Foundation Book Grants (10 per semester)
    • $250 per semester
    • Priority given to single mothers
    • Student must be custodial parent
    • Student must be employed full- or part-time
    • Demonstrated financial need
    • Additional application must be completed (available in Student Affairs)
  2. Alumni Association Book Grants (up to 6 per semester)
    • $125 per semester
    • Assistance for books and required class materials (Please pick up an application in the Financial Aid Office.)
  3. Athletic Talent Grants (number varies)
    • Up to 12 credits per semester
    • Must meet the GPA eligibility requirement as stipulated by the National Junior College Athletic Association
    • Call Athletics Director at 856-351-2693 for an application
    • Must complete financial aid application before the amount of the Talent Grant Award is determined
  4. 4. Virginia Bachman Grant (1)
    • $100
    • Assistance for books and required class materials
  5. 5. Davidow Student Assistance Scholarship (up to 10)
    • $250 per academic year
    • Assistance for books and required class materials
  6. Arlene Kelley Book Grant (1)
    • $200 per semester
    • Assistance for books and required class materials (Please pick up an application in Student Affairs.)
  7. Reverend James Leonard Memorial Scholarship (1)
    • $200 per academic year
    • Assistance for books and required class materials
    • Student must be enrolled in Communications/Journalism, Computer Graphic Art or Social/Community Service majors
    • Preference given to applicants from economically disadvantaged families
  8. Lower Alloways Creek Scholarships (number and amount vary)
    • Lower Alloways Creek resident (Apply at Township Clerk’s Office.)

    • Awards for graduates in top 15 percent of high school class (pending State of New Jersey funding)
